Which is the highest mountain in the world?
Mount Everest is the highest peak of the world. The peak of the Mount Everest is 8,848 meters above sea level. This is found in the northernmost range of Himalaya which is known as Greater Himalaya.
In Nepal it is locally known as Sagarmatha which means the top of heaven and in Tibet it is known as Chomolungma which means Queen of the Mountains.
It is named after George Everest, who was the Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843. Scientists say that Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain, probably originated after the Indian landmass collided with the Asian region.
Researchers said that the Himalayan region came into existence due to an unexpected collision between the two landforms and then the region expanded in height.
For the first time, Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, an Indian citizen of Nepalese origin, climbed this highest mountain peak in the world. Junko Tabei was the first woman to climb Mount Everest from Japan.
The world's second highest mountain peak K2 is located in the Karakoram mountain range, also known as Godwin Austin. It is the highest mountain peak (8611) meters in the Western Himalayas and India. It is located in POK (Pakistan Occupied Kashmir).
Kangchenjunga is the third highest peak in the world, situated on the border of Nepal in the northwest part of Sikkim. Its height is 8,586 meters. It is located 74 km northwest of Darjeeling.
