Australia is the smallest continent in the world. It is located in the southern and eastern hemispheres. The Tropic of Capricorn passes through it. The continent was discovered by Abel Tasman and Captain James Cook. It is a continent surrounded by the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.

The largest lake in Australia is Lake Eyre (Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre). Lake Eyre is located in South Australia. It is a salt water lake which remains dry for most of the year but it fills up during the rainy season.

Lake Eyre in the continent of Australia covers an area of up to 9,500 km (3,668 sq mi). The lowest part of Lake Eyre is about 50 feet (15 meters) below sea level. The official name of Lake Eyre was changed in December 2012 to combine with the tribal name, Kati Thanda.

Lake Eyre is divided into two sections, Eyre North and Eyre South. Lake Eyre North has a length of 144 kilometers (89 mi) and a width of 65 kilometers (40 mi). Eyre North and Eyre South connect to the Goyder Channel.
Lake Eyre Lake is named after British explorer and colonization officer Edward John Eyre, who was the first European to see it in 1840.
