In the north-western European part of Russia is Lake Onega, located on the territory of the Republic of Karelia, Leningrad Oblast and Vologda Oblast. Lake Onega has a surface area of 9,700 km (3,700 sq mi). It is considered the second largest lake in the continent of Europe and Lake Balaton in Hungary is the largest lake in Central Europe, with a surface area of 592 square kilometres.
Lake Onega has a maximum length of 245 kilometers (152 mi) and a maximum width of 91.6 kilometers (56.9 mi). Lake Onega has an average depth of 30 m (98 ft) and a maximum depth of 127 m (417 ft).
The shores to the north and northwest of Lake Onega are high and rocky, made of layered granite and covered with forest. Onega Lake is emptied by about 50 rivers. The Svir River originates from Lake Onega and empties into Lake Ladoga. It is 224 km long.

There are about 1,650 islands on the lake. The Kizhi Pogost of Kizhi Island in Lake Onega is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

More than 40 fish species are found in Lake Onega, including whitefishes, smelt, burbot, ruffe, perch, carp bream and salmon.
Lake Onega's canals allow the transport of goods from Germany to Iran, with Sweden, Finland, Germany and Denmark receiving the most traffic. Every year more than 10,000 ship voyages on Lake Onega transport approximately 10-12 million tons of cargo.
